Andrea Cigni

He graduated at the University of Bologna (School of Arts, Music and Performance), and then he has made several important experiences in drama, mimics, dance and expressiveness of the body. As actor and mimic he has collaborated with international directors such as Pier Luigi Pizzi, Giancarlo Cobelli, Yannis Kokkos, Alberto Fassini, Beni Montresor, and Henning Brockhaus.

As opera direction assistant he begun to work in several opera houses (Rinaldo, Aida, Fille du Régiment, Otello, L’Orfeo, Francesca da Rimini, Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, The turn of the screw, etc.). He directed of several theatrical pieces by Pirandello, Caproni, Siciliano, and Genet.

In 2006 he made his début at the Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona with a music and dance performance entitled Buenos Aires Madrigals, which was immediately after followed by the direction of Vivaldi’s opera Andromeda Liberata. On May 2007 he opened the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona directing Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo conducted  by A. Marcon

In 2008 Andrea directed Paride and Elena by Gluck for the Circuito Lirico Toscano in Pisa, Livorno and Lucca, in a co-production with the Opera Royal de Wallonie in Liège. The well-renowned English magazine «Opera Now» stated that Cigni was one of the best directors of 2008 for this staging. In the same year he directed the diptych La Medium by Menotti and Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, which was acclaimed by the audience, and glowingly reviewed by the critics.

In 2009 he worked at Aida in Florence, sets by Igor Mitoraj, and directed La Figlia del Reggimento by Gaetano Donizetti. In 2010, he directed very successful productions of La Traviata (Pavia, Como, Cremona, Brescia), Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and in 2011 season Rota’s Il cappello di paglia di Firenze (Florence, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) and Norma by Vincenzo Bellini in Sassari, Theatre Giuseppe Verdi.

In 2012 he will work for a new direction of Ernani by Giuseppe Verdi and Madama Butterfly (Teatro Massimo Palermo).

For the Wexford Opera Festival in 2013 he will set The Italian Straw Hat by Nino Rota, revived on December at Maggio Fiorentino in Florence.

In 2014 and 2015 a new production of Don Pasquale by Donizetti in a French co-production between Clermont-Ferrand, Reims, Vichy, Limoges, Saint Etienne, Rouen, Massy, Avignon, Jesi and Piacenza theatres. La cambiale di matrimonio by Rossini in Parma (Teatro Regio) and Reggio Emilia (Teatro Valli).

On June 2014 he was in Almaty Opera House, Kazakistan, for a new production of Abay. In Sassari (Teatro Comunale – october 2014) for a staging of Carmen by Bizet and in Cremona, Teatro Ponchielli – november 2014, for Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi.

In 2016: Fedra by Paisiello in Catania (Teatro Massimo Bellini), Don Pasquale for OperaLombardia, Teatro di Jesi and Festival Donizetti, Tosca by Puccini in Minnesota Opera House, L’Occasione fa il ladro for Teatro Regio di Parma.

2017/2018 plans are: La Straniera by Bellini for Catania Bellini Opera House, Florence Opera House, a new project of Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali by Donizetti, L’Orfeo by Monteverdi, Aida by Verdi (China) and Thaïs by Massenet for Minnesota Opera House.

He is artistic director of the Orizzonti Festival for Performing Arts in Chiusi (Siena), Tuscany.
